Each year, the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners hosts a Symposium for its members. This year, for the first time ever, the Symposium will be open to non-members. (See Non-Member registration form posted in Related Downloads box to the right.)
The IAFP’s eighth annual Symposium takes place in spectacular Banff, Alberta on September 23rd to 25th, with round-table sessions Saturday morning (Sept. 25th) and an optional Welcome Reception the evening of Sept. 22nd.

The Symposium will be held at the Rimrock Resort Hotel.
Delegates will be informed how to obtain the $199 per night rate at the Rimrock when they register for this event.
The IAFP Symposium has consistently provided a rare opportunity to meet truly advanced financial planners, and to study technical subjects related to financial planning at an advanced level. Base cost for Members to attend the Symposium is $695 (plus tax). Register here. Cost for Non-Members is $845 (plus tax), which includes $150 credit towards (optional) application for Associate Membership.
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn and interact with other advanced planners!
Theme for 2010
Last year’s Symposium on “Sustainability and financial planning” exceeded all expectations. You can read the report, and watch for another Advisors Edge series on the case study and why London was such a significant conference.
This year’s Symposium theme is View from the Summit: Who Advises the Advisors? The case study will consider the personal and business needs of a typical 56-year-old business owner looking to retire in the next 5 to 6 years. We will examine issues around business succession planning, estate planning with a blended family, asset allocation and systematic withdrawal plans - examining not only the numbers and projections for retirement, but equally important, the psychology of retirement and the need for your clients to be mentally prepared. We will also take a look at specific challenges related to end-of-career planning, and how professional resources can help a business owner (coincidentally in this case, a financial planner!) transfer ownership and transform a successful career into successful retirement.
The full case study is now posted on the IAFP Members’ Symposium Details page. Contact us at 1-888-298-3292 if you need further information.
Evening Programs
Two evening programs are planned this year for delegates and guests. Join us for fine dining and live entertainment. You can attend the Thursday-night BBQ or the Friday-night Gala, or both for a combined cost of $150 plus tax per person.
Guest/Spousal Program
This year’s event will depart from the norm. We’ve arranged a fabulous Guest Program for spouses and other companions who may want to take in the natural beauty of Banff and the luxuries of the Rimrock Resort while you’re attending the conference. Full details and pricing for these optional activities can be found on our Symposium Guest Program web page. (Registration for the Symposium is separate.)
Adjacent Courses
While the IAFP has no say in the content of these courses, the subject covered can often complement our Symposium topics. IAFP Members also welcome the opportunity to earn more CE credits, the special discounts and the travel convenience of back-to-back events.
Financial Divorce Specialist - Pre-Symposium Course, Sept. 20 to 22
Symposium Delegates can obtain a 20% discount on the Financial Divorce Specialist (FDS) designation course (or the advanced course) being offered in Banff immediately prior to the IAFP Symposium. This 30 CE credit course is led by R.F.P. Linda Cartier and will also be held at the Rimrock Resort Hotel. For complete information, visit the Academy of Financial Divorce Specialists.
Fee Model Solutions - Post-Symposium Workshop, September 25 to 27 (first day begins at 1:00 p.m.)
R.F.P. Marc Lamontagne will guide you through the whys and hows of the fee model and explain why it makes sense for you and your clients. You’ll have the opportunity to interact personally with a practicing fee financial planner and guest lecturers who have been charging fees for over a decade. They’ll share the tips and tools of fee advisors, answer your questions and give you practical advice directly applicable to your practice. Plus, you’ll leave with a copy of the Fee Model Solutions Workbook which includes useful templates, exercises and techniques. Visit To Fee or Not to Fee for more information and to receive the IAFP Symposium early bird discount price of $495.
