Registered Financial Planners in the News
R.F.P.s on the whole tend to be more knowledgeable than others calling themselves financial planners, so they are often sought out by reporters. The IAFP maintains a Media Roster to connect reporters to select R.F.P.s based on specialty areas. (All are committed to a comprehensive planning approach.)
The IAFP would like to share that coverage with you in the form of media interviews, articles, blogs or other publications by R.F.P.s. Thank you to the IAFP Members who informed us of the following links - further contributions are welcome.
The R.F.P.s below are listed in order of the number of Google references to their name plus “R.F.P.” But first, a December 2009 article on the IAFP’s new President, Lenore Davis: Raising the bar: Advisor insists financial planning is a profession
David Christianson is #1 in Google references with twice the number of anyone else! Public speaker, financial planner, educator, hilarious IAFP Symposium MC, and author of the first Practice Standards for R.F.P.s, David has now created “the most approachable and informative financial planning site online” in the form of an interactive Blog at www.davidchristianson.com.
Second most-mentioned online (and also hilarious) is 4-year IAFP Communications Chair, Warren Baldwin. See Morningstar’s “Ask the Expert” to read how Warren answered the question: Should I do business with a full-service or a fee-based advisor?
Following closely behind Warren is well-known speaker, educator and Canada/US planner, Terry Ritchie, expert on cross-border financial planning and co-author of The Canadian Snowbird in America, The Canadian in America, and The American in Canada. If you’re an IAFP Member, you can also see Terry’s slides from his presentation at the Feb. 2010 Calgary Network meeting (requires log-in): US Estate Planning: What Should Advisors Do Now?
Next is Chartered Accountant and R.F.P. Blair Corkum, who writes to the CICA about competency differences between the CA, CFP, and R.F.P. when it comes to financial planning.
Then there’s educator and freelance journalist, Michael Berton who had the courage to prescribe post-crisis investment strategies in Jan. 2009 for Advocis’ Forum Magazine: Recovery Rx. Next is Marc Lamontagne, educator, advocate for fee-based planning, and author of To Fee or Not to Fee II.
Following is author Lynn Biscott who provides regular updates to Thomson Carswell’s Guide to Personal Financial Planning (described as a “… definitive authority that sets the standard for the activities and practices of Canadian personal financial planning professionals”). In 2009, Lynn wrote The Boomers Retire: A Guide for Financial Advisors and their Clients. (IAFP Members can receive a discount on these publications by selecting “Special Offers from Carswell” in the Member Resources section.)
Profiles:
Doug Macdonald’s significant and lasting contribution to the financial planning profession was lauded in this Advisor’s Edge article: Doug Macdonald named Career Achievement Award winner
Investment Executive profiles hybrid financial planner / leadership coach Peggy Cameron in their April 2010 edition.
There are many more well-publicized R.F.P.s recognized widely for their expertise. Registered Financial Planners are unique because they have always been required to successfully write a detailed professional exam and submit a multifaceted personal financial plan for peer review. Each year they are required to re-affirm their full-time involvement in the practice of providing in-depth personal financial planning.
