The theme was “The Saga Continues; The Towers Family - Part III” and our Symposium Committee, Peggy Cameron, John Burns, John Hope, Pam Magyar and Matthew Ardrey, did an outstanding job of assembling a diverse group of speakers.

The Gala cocktail hour started with a Jazz Trio and was followed by a lovely dinner.
The food was great and the guests were entertained and danced the night away with the live band “The New Classics”
Ian Douglas Macdonald Award of Excellence
The IAFP presented the Second “Ian Douglas Macdonald Award of Excellence” at the Symposium this year. The Award is named for one of the Founders of the R.F.P. designation, Ian “Doug” Macdonald, who holds R.F.P. Certificate #1. Doug has been an avid supporter of the IAFP and the R.F.P. designation since its inception. He is well known and respected throughout the Financial Planning profession and has received numerous awards including lifetime achievement awards in Financial Planning. What better way to honour him, than to create this award in his name!
A Potential Award recipient include some, but not necessarily all, of the following:
Long-standing and exemplary service to the IAFP through volunteerism
Promotion of professionalism in financial planning and the REGISTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER designation as
representative of the Mark of choice for financial planners in Canada
Significant involvement in the IAFP’s varied and sundry volunteer requirements, including the IAFP annual
symposium, the R.F.P. examination development process, and comprehensive case submission review
Direct or broad support of the R.F.P. designation within the financial planning profession
Involvement in development and maintenance of IAFP’s practice standards and code of ethics
Extensive promotion of financial planning and the R.F.P. Mark to Canadians on a grassroots level

Dalhousie Students
The IAFP’s national Student Case Competition winners Tatum Freigang, Kevin Vigneau and Jessie Rankin from Dalhousie University gave a great presentation on the Appropriate Use of Social Media in Financial Planning.

The 16th Annual Symposium of the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners (IAFP) was held in Gatineau, QC September 26th to September 29th, 2018. This event was sold out and the room was packed.
