{"id":4363,"date":"2024-08-01T15:11:34","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T22:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iafp.ca\/planners\/?p=4363"},"modified":"2024-08-01T15:17:49","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T22:17:49","slug":"iafp-to-adopt-fiduciary-standard-for-rfp-designation-holders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iafp.ca\/planners\/articles\/2024\/08\/01\/iafp-to-adopt-fiduciary-standard-for-rfp-designation-holders\/","title":{"rendered":"IAFP to adopt fiduciary standard for RFP designation holders"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"4363\" class=\"elementor elementor-4363\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6af3653 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default parallax_section_no qode_elementor_container_no\" data-id=\"6af3653\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4198b09\" data-id=\"4198b09\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c28fed0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c28fed0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Measure to be in place for 2026 renewals\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d0e907c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d0e907c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Institute of Advanced Financial Planners (IAFP) has a new plan in the works: implementing a fiduciary standard.<\/p>\n<p>The institute, which oversees the registered financial planner (RFP) designation, said in a letter to members last week that it intends for members to \u201cadopt a fiduciary standard when providing financial planning services to their clients.\u201d The new measure would be in place for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>A fiduciary standard would be \u201cone more reason\u201d for prospective clients to seek professionals with the RFP designation, the letter said, and would be expected to \u201cattract the brightest and most ethical financial planners\u201d to the institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, this simply is the right thing to do,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>It was signed by Aaron Hector, vice-president and symposium chair with the IAFP, who is also leading the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost consumers \u2014 regular Canadians \u2014 would make the assumption that if they\u2019re talking to a financial planner [who is] making recommendations to them, [the planner] would be doing that in the realm of a fiduciary responsibility,\u201d Hector said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>When RFP holders renew their designations in 2026, they\u2019d be required to attest to the fiduciary standard.<\/p>\n<p>Feedback so far has been positive, Hector said, adding that the IAFP\u2019s code of ethics already has some of the requirements of a fiduciary framework, including acting in clients\u2019 best interests.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iafp.ca\/planners\/about-us\/code-of-ethics\/\">The code<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also lists factors that can give rise to a member having a fiduciary relationship to a client under the law, such as when a client is vulnerable and trusts the member.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hector is a founding member of the Financial Planning Association of Canada, which was created in 2019 to help professionalize financial planning and also has a fiduciary pledge. Stateside, the CFP Board has a fiduciary duty as part of its conduct standards. And FP Canada has a duty of loyalty in its code of ethics to place clients\u2019 interests first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very clear there is an appetite for planners who are willing to raise their hand and say, \u2018Yes, I\u2019m going to act as a fiduciary,\u2019\u2019\u2019 Hector said.<\/p>\n<p>The IAFP would be the first certification body in Canada to implement a fiduciary standard, the IAFP noted in its letter to members, \u201cand we do not take this lightly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the next year, the institute will provide members with educational resources to address their questions about the measure and a focus group will be established to kick off discussion, the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a year to figure out all the nitty-gritty details,\u201d Hector said, which would include details about oversight of designation holders.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the aim is clear: \u201cWe\u2019re trying to elevate our professionalism, elevate financial planning and let consumers know that if you\u2019re working with an RFP, you\u2019re working with someone who is holding themselves out as a fiduciary,\u201d Hector said.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9612764 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"9612764\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b71725d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b71725d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This article was written by Michelle Schriver and published in Investment Executive, Michelle Schriver, July 30, 2024.
