They may seem separate, but they connect through perceived value, client advocacy and a client’s sense of alignment and safety. The common denominator is the overall client experience.

The industry often responds to these pressures by adding more planning, technology, reporting and information. All matter. But none automatically creates the confidence that turns information into a decision and a decision into action. Good advice can be technically right and still not drive confident client action.

Increasingly, AI is playing a role in client experience, and in many of the important decisions a client makes. They can use it to clarify recommendations, compare alternatives, question assumptions and seek second opinions. All of this raises the standard for a human advisor.

Understanding what AI can provide them, clients are gravitating to advisors who can offer something more than a good strategy. They expect the right strategy for their life.

Getting that right demands judgment, context and understanding the client. It requires asking the right life questions and actively engaging clients to work through the trade-offs that matter.

Clients are also more vigilant than they have been in years. Economic uncertainty, high household costs, market volatility and rapid technological change all play a part. So does wariness of anything that feels sales-oriented, misinformed or fraudulent.

One advisor put it this way: “Do you answer the door when it rings? Open every email? Or answer your cell phone when you do not recognize the caller, knowing your voice could be recorded?” That is the backdrop many clients now bring to financial decisions.

They are not simply looking for answers. They are looking for clarity, safety and the confidence to act. This is where the human side of advice needs to evolve. It is not about moving away from technology. It is about working in tandem with it.

Technology can make research faster, planning more sophisticated and service more efficient. But it cannot interpret hesitation, reconcile competing family priorities or know when to simplify, pause or challenge thoughtfully.

The intentional client experience

An advisor I’ve worked with described what changed as she became more intentional about creating a guided client experience. Clients said they felt heard and understood. Conversations became less about presenting an answer and more about working through the decision together. And clients took action.

The technical advice didn’t suddenly become better. The client’s experience of it changed.

Clients need to feel known before they are advised. They want to be involved, not managed. They want your support through the decision — not simply to be handed a recommendation.

When that experience is present, the business outcomes tend to follow. Price becomes less of a standalone conversation because clients experience value beyond an investment return, plan or product.

Referrals become more natural because clients can say their advisor understood what mattered and helped them make a decision they could stand behind. Trust becomes more durable because it is built on repeated experiences of competence, alignment, safety, inclusion and support.

The future of advice will still demand technical excellence: strong planning, sound technology and the ability to navigate growing complexity. But those capabilities are increasingly the entry ticket. The differentiator will be the quality of the human experience around the advice.

In an AI era, the advisor who simply provides answers will be easier to replace. The advisor who helps clients arrive at confident, well-considered decisions will become more valuable. That is not a softer version of advice. It is the next level of the profession.

This article was written by Jim Lyons and was first published in Advisor.ca on October 6, 2026

As AI reshapes financial advice, technical expertise alone may no longer be enough.
