The IAFP offers 4 types of membership:
(i) Professional
A professional member is an individual who has achieved their R.F.P. designation.
(ii) Associate
An Associate member is a practicing financial planner who is working towards their R.F.P. designation.
(iii) Affiliate
An Affiliate member is an individual who has an interest in the financial planning profession but may not be a financial planner.
(iv) Retired
A Retired member is a former R.F.P. who has retired from the financial planning profession.
Only Associate Members may apply for Professional Membership and thereby be awarded the R.F.P.® designation (see “Associates Welcome!” below). Only Professional Members may apply for Retired Membership.
You may apply for one of the remaining two categories of membership. If you are a practicing financial planner, you must apply for Associate Membership. Print out the appropriate application form and either mail it in to the IAFP with a cheque or money order, or, fax in the form and arrange cheque or credit card payment as shown on the form.
Printable (pdf) application forms are available under Related Downloads on this page for:
a) new Associate membership applications
b) new Affiliate membership applications
NOTE: Your application is subject to approval by the IAFP. If for any reason your application is not approved, you will be notified and your membership fees will be refunded in due course.
Interested in standing out from the crowd? Financial planners who wish to become R.F.P.s (Registered Financial Planners) can join the Institute as Associates. The current annual fee for Associate Membership is $350 plus tax. (This will be pro-rated to the first of the calendar month in which your application is received, and the difference credited toward your first year of membership renewal.)
To be eligible for Associate Membership, you must already be employed in the financial services industry. Associate members are expected to become R.F.P.s within 18 months. (Exceptions may be made in certain jurisdictions such as the province of Quebec.)
The main benefit of Associate Membership is the opportunity to take part in Institute activities such as the annual Symposium, and to gain access to the Members Section of this website and the resources contained therein.
Associate Members will not have voting privileges or be permitted to hold office in the organization. Likewise, Associate Members will not be able to advertise their affiliation with the Institute on letterhead, business cards etc.
Only Associate Members are eligible to write the R.F.P.® exam(s) and submit a comprehensive financial plan for peer review with the aim of acquiring full R.F.P.® status. Similarly, the technical examination Study Guide will be made available only to Associate Members.
For further information contact the Institute.
