Russell was a fee based financial planner specializing in retirement income security for clients. He wound down his practice in 2018 and no longer accepts financial planning assignments. He now makes referrals to qualified professionals as they arise in all areas of financial planning, wealth management, taxation and estate planning.
He was a fee only retirement planner for over 25 years providing services in three areas:
Russell founded Todd & Associates Financial Knowledge Inc. His firm merged in 2011 with Doherty & Bryant Wealth Advisors Inc. Russell affiliated with the new firm, assisting new clients in accessing their unique wealth advisory services until 2013, when he left and established TFM Financial Management Inc. to help a limited number of unique clients.
Russell was a workshop facilitator with The Financial Education Institute of Canada from 1990 to 2013. His workshops taught financial self-management skills for younger people and he specialized in pre-retirement lifestyle planning to employees in corporations, non-profits and government departments. His workshops were inspiring, educational, and motivating, and helped thousands that have attended over the years.
Since 2016 Russell has focused on helping individuals interested in becoming financial planning professionals to attain their R.F.P. designation, and keeping the bar high for competence and professionalism in our industry.
In 2018+ Russell is creating a new website The Financial Mentor (under construction) to better reflect his focus on financial mentorship for individuals seeking to become R.F.P. professionals, as well as providing educational resources for the public.
Melanie is a 25-year veteran in the financial services industry and is currently serving as Vice President for the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners (IAFP).
In the year 2000, she incorporated Legacy Wealth Management, a fully integrated financial planning and investment boutique in Calgary, Alberta. Partnering with Investment Planning Counsel (IPC) in 2011 was a transition that allowed Melanie’s team access to the latest in technology, wealth management techniques and planning tools on behalf of Legacy’s clientele. Both IPC and Legacy embrace very similar philosophies and that is in helping their clients to achieve and “Live Their Dream”.
As an independent planning firm, Legacy Wealth Management delivers impartial advice to their client by employing Total Wealthcare™, a focus upon the six-step planning process to impart strategic and personalized planning solutions. Melanie’s goal and that of her team is to create satisfying client relationships that will stand the test of time. Emphasis is therefore continually placed upon enhancing expertise and elevating service.
Our values are Commitment, Integrity and Focus – Every Step of the Way.
Legacy Wealth Management is supported by four team members, all with varying levels and areas of expertise. Their client is offered a choice of fee arrangements, designed to suit each individual’s preference. We work with those who are committed to the financial planning process and our business primarily consists of clients who hold investable assets of $500K or more.
I am basically fee-based. I charge direct fees for financial planning work and/or charge an asset-based fee if there are investments involved. Where insurance sales are involved, I still earn commissions for product placements. I have a specialty in working with retiring or retired clients. My partner, Cathie Hurlburt, is a Financial Divorce Specialist. Irma Mattes, our new para-planner currently provides us with planning support.
I am part of a team with two other planners and three assistants. We are incorporated. Our group, in turn, is part of a firm (branch) of 22 advisors.
Mutual Funds. Life, Accident and Disability
We are primarily focus on life planning (financial Planning) for our clients. As a result we focus on a full or modular financial planning engagement for all clients. We offer mutual fund, private managed accounts, insurance solutions and tax preparation as part of our service offering. We have written a workbook on how to incorporate financial planning into your practice for Advocis in 2004 (now out of print). Both Cathie and I have taught the CFP courses at BCIT over the years – we are now retired from teaching night courses. I have written financial planning articles over the years for Advisor’s Edge, Advisor.ca and FORUM magazine.

We are fee only planners and do not sell products.
Howard has essentially retired from practice and now spends his time raising Venture Capital and sitting on corporate Boards. That leaves Lenore as a sole proprietor, with one part time planner and one part time para planner.
Lenore holds a life licence, but only so she can discuss specific policies with clients who bring them in for review.
Our credo is: “Knowing what we know, but thinking the way you do, here is our recommended solution”.
Our mantra is: “Personal Financial Planning is a process not a product, and it’s 80% personal and only 20% financial”.
We help our clients manage their relationship with the people who provide the financial products to accomplish their goals.
Because tax structure is at the heart of planning, we prepare the T1 tax returns for most of our personal and small business clients. However, we defer preparation of T2’s to our corporate clients’ accountants. 40% of our business consists of proprietorships and corporations.
For investment advice we refer our clients to appropriate Investment Counsel.
Fee-for-service consulting, tax preparation and term deposit business are all done outside of the fund dealer.
At present I am a sole practitioner without any assistants. This is by choice. I am also a branch compliance officer so I get my fill of other planners.
IFIC certificate on Jan. 31, 1984 and have been self- employed ever since. In addition to being licensed through the MFDA, I hold a Level 2 life license
Since the early 1990s I have had a strong interest in socially responsible investing and philanthropy. Many of my referrals come as a result of being a professional member of the Social Investment Organization. I do not advertise or ask clients for referrals. They simply appear. If fund product is placed it is always at zero percent front end. Virtually all clients are charged consulting on an hourly basis although I exercise discretion. It is difficult to transition clients who have been used to getting advise for free. As a senior planner (about to turn 60), I am concerned about succession and have a plan in place – just in case. Always a good idea to practice what you preach.

The majority of Terry’s practice consists of providing the following services:
• Tax planning & preparation services
• Estate planning, primarily for buinsess owners / high net worth clients
• Investment planning and portfolio monitoring
• Retirement planning
Terry is pleased that 90% of the new clients he receives are referrals from existing clients.
A much sought-after speaker and former Vancouver Sun personal finance columnist, Lynne Triffon puts her passion for financial planning to good use and for more than just her clients’ benefit. Twenty-one years ago she discovered the advantages of fee-based financial planning and has been a staunch advocate ever since. Over the years, Lynne has worked within the industry in a leadership capacity to establish best practices for financial planning. It’s all part of her personal commitment to make sure her T.E. Wealth clients always receive the best in guidance and service. Not surprisingly, many of Lynne’s clients have been with her for more than 15 years and the growth of her client base can be credited to a steady stream of referrals.
Taking a personal interest in her clients’ lives, being innovative when solving problems and putting effective solutions in place are just some of the reasons Lynne has enjoyed success in wealth management. She’s also generous with her expertise, sharing her financial knowledge through the media, at employee education seminars and in her position as Chair of the financial advisory committee for a Vancouver-based charitable foundation. Originally considering a career in accounting, Lynne found her calling in financial planning and there are many people who are glad she did.

All new clients and the majority of existing clients have a comprehensive financial plan completed prior to commencement of activities. We use a signed letter of engagement and a compensation disclosure letter with all clients. Being in rural Manitoba, my main focus and preference is the deal with farmers and/or rural small businesspersons. My business mandate is to partner with clients who wish to make a smooth transition to a stress fee retirement. I have collaborated with the editors of Grainews (a farmers newspaper) in providing the supporting financial plan for a Farmer Financial Planner column. Past articles can be viewed on my websit.

I have been working with individuals and their families for over 35 years. I have several second & third generation clients. I take the time to understand your unique situation, as well as your concerns and aspirations for your family. This understanding forms the basis of your custom tailored financial plan. Regular reviews ensure your plan remains consistent with your circumstances and goals.
Each plan takes into account the preservation and creation of wealth, minimizing income tax whenever possible and making sure you have the correct asset allocation to minimize risk.
Professional Focus - Financial Planning with a focus on Retirement, Income Tax and Estate Preservation.
Jeff Wachman is a senior financial planning advisor at Assante Financial Management Ltd. and owner of Wachman Wealth Management Inc. He graduated from McGill University in 1980, and has over 14 years of financial planning experience and 20 years of entrepreneurial business experience. He specializes in Wealth by Design, Income for Life Portfolios, and Entrepreneurial Coaching, with licenses in Mutual Funds and Life Insurance.
From Jeff’s experience, investment management—picking and trading investments—has not been significant in optimizing wealth; it is regular reviews of family net worth and cash flow management that are the keys to wealth creation. The wealthy have mastered this practice, while the media, the banks, and brokers focus primarily on investments. We often look at debt or short-term investment performance as the primary indicators of financial progress, but these numbers do not tell the most important story: Net worth is the indicator that really addresses the Financial Progress Question.
Net worth and cash flow management are the two most important components of wealth creation, but many financial practices do not have programs to address these because they are just too labour-intensive to prepare. To resolve this, Jeff has designed a program with these components to optimize wealth creation and enhance financial well-being.
His practice is based on a fee for service model. He has a detailed Letter of Engagement describing the fee structures for financial planning, investment management, and entrepreneurial coaching. He transitioned to this model in 2008, and it has received overwhelmingly positive responses from his clients for this practice. Not only does this model provide adequate compensation and flexibility based on the work at hand, but it also provides complete transparency for his clients.
Over the years, Jeff has built a diversified practice by enhancing family wealth and security. He has a stable client base with families who have seen significant progress in their net worth throughout the economic cycles. His practice is focused on financial health, yet his team also organizes annual events to help improve their clients’ overall well-being, such as wellness seminars and travel strategy seminars. Jeff and his team look forward to growing the practice through their existing client base by continuing to enrich their clients’ quality of life.
